Weston Park (2) put on a busy weekend in the superb autumn sunshine for riders hopeful of booking their place at the 2017 Mitsubishi Motors Cup, with two BE90 and one BE100 sections of Mitsubishi Motors Regional Finals.
It was third time lucky for Gloucestershire based journalist Kate Justice as the Shropshire event gave the 41 year old her first ticket to the prestigious competition which is held on the eve of the international Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials.
Kate and her own 10 year old gelding Tonics Pro Test’s challenge at qualification last year sadly didn’t come to fruition and their eighth place at the Regional Final at Homme House Horse Trials this August saw them again miss out. However, their first placing in the BE90 section E ensured there was no doubt in their qualification for 2017, as the combination claimed victory finishing on their impressive dressage score of 25.8 penalties.
The Mitsubishi Motors BE90 section D Regional Final went to first time qualifier Kerry Olivieri and Moygannon Cruise. The Cheshire based rider piloted her own nine year old gelding to the win on their dressage score of 27 penalties to stay 1.5 penalties clear of closest competitor Oliver Lofthouse and Mary Lofthouse’s Amicitia, with whom he rode at the 2016 Mitsubishi Motors Cup.
There was a runaway win in the BE100 Mitsubishi Motors Regional Final as Oxfordshire’s Caroline Hawkins took first place on Mrs Amanda Bacon’s nine year old gelding Kilbawn Lad. Despite an error of course in the dressage and 6.8 time penalties in the cross country phase the duos 18.8 dressage score could not be caught and the pair claimed the win and their place to the 2017 Mitsubishi Motors Cup.
The Mitsubishi Motors Cup, formerly known as the Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships, is hosted at the British Eventing entry levels of BE90 and BE100 and sees riders take on a competitive qualification process for the chance to ride on the same turf of eventing’s elite at the Badminton Estate in Gloucestershire. Thanks to Mitsubishi Motors competitors challenge for a spectacular prize package which includes the winner of both the BE90 and BE100 taking home a brand new car from the Mitsubishi range for one year.
Full details on the Mitsubishi Motors Cup qualifiers for 2017 can be found on the website HERE.
The 2017 Mitsubishi Motors Cup takes place Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd May next year followed by the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials which take place Wednesday 3rd to Sunday 7th May 2017.
